Will A Golf Ball Dent A Metal Roof?

Someone recently asked us, "Will metal roofing stand up to being pounded with golf balls? I live on a golf course and my tile roof has many broken tiles. I need something that will help prevent breakage."

Good question. And with so many folks living on golf courses these days, it's likely that many others are wondering the same thing. So here's the answer:

One of the advantages of metal is that it isn't brittle like tile, nor soft like asphalt, and so the impact of a golf ball or a hail stone can be absorbed without breakage. However, there are some important considerations that must be pointed out:

If the metal is too thin or too smooth, then the impact of a golf ball might be clearly evident to the point of being objectionable. While it's most likely the case that a strong impact from a golf ball can "leave a mark," a properly specified metal roof won't be functionally compromised. In other words, you might be able to see a dent, but the roof will continue to function and look good.

So, when ordering a roof that you know is going to be struck by errant golf balls, make sure that you order one in which the metal is strong enough for the job and that the finish has enough pattern that dents won't be visible. We have a number of roofs that fit into those two categories - coated steel tiles and shakes among them - so feel free to use our free estimate form or call today, and we'll be happy to elaborate.
