Top Four Metal Roof Colors

Here's another in our Q&A series. Have a burning roofing question? Ask away in the comments and we'll answer!

Q. What are the best colors for a metal roof?

A. Great question! Like most roofing questions, however, there's no hard and fast answer. While there may be best materials for certain applications, like finished aluminum in coastal locations or copper for curved roof lines, the best color choice for a specific project is likely in the eye of the beholder. That being said, here are the top four metal roof colors in terms of popularity (and in our experience):

1. Brown

It may sound plain, but the options for brown in metal roof materials are quite varied. From shiny or matte finishes (including certified Energy Star options) in materials like steel and aluminum, and flat or textured choices that can incorporate multiple shades for a truly dimenisonal look, you'll quickly see that brown isn't so plain.

2. Gray

Gray is another popular choice for metal roofing, and the same array of options holds true here. There are multiple materials available in beautiful gray tones, from natural metals that offer metallic or vintage gun-metal grays to coated or finished options in shiny, matte, flat and textured options. In general, gray is a great color for complimenting all sorts of color palettes and architectural styles.

3. Red

Just like the grays and browns, red metal roofing comes in an array of options. It's a good option for those looking to mimic a Spanish tile look, but it works equally well in a shake or shingle profile too. It also tends to stand out as a "look at me" color, which makes it great when you're trying to make a statement with your roof.

4. Natural Metals like Copper and Zinc copper diamond shingles | Metal Roof Network

Choosing a natural metal means colors will gun the gamut from bronze to patina green to beautiful metalllic grays. Unlike a finished or coated steel or aluminum option, which starts as one color and stays that colors (red, green, blue, brown, gray, etc.), a natural metal will weather and mature over time, developing a distinct and custom patina. It's a beautiful Old World effect, and it works well on distinguished buildings, which is why we've found it to be among our most popular "colors."
