Standing Seam Roof Panels - A Popular Metal Roof Option

One of the most recognized metal roof profiles is the distinctive yet low-profile standing seam panel. So what is it?

Most people could probably pick a standing seam panel roof out of a line-up - it's an exposed metal roof system in which the panels are joined in a waterproof fashion above the flat of the panel (at the "seam") without the use of through fasteners.

The style is both attractive and functional, as the raised panel edges provide an elegant sense of dimension, and the non-through fastener use means no weak points that in other roofing systems typically become leak points.

Here are a few other benefits that a quality standing seam panel roof offers:

  • Aesthetics: Available in a bevy of materials (solid copperfinished steel, natural steel), with options for various colors and finishes, including those that are Energy Star certified, it's likely that there's a standing seam panel roof for just about any application.

  • Ease of Installation: The easier a roof is to lay, the quicker and less expensive it will be, so the fact that most standing seam roofs are easy to install is another big bonus.

  • Longevity: Like all quality metal roofs, longevity is a big part of the appeal. Unlike other roof materials (asphalt shingles, we're looking at you) that deteriorate rapidly no matter what their warranties say, metal roof systems are designed to last as long as the buildings on which they stand. It's part of what makes a metal roof the best choice for use under roof-top solar components - no costly removal and reinstallation just to replace those eco-unfriendly shingles!

  • Performance: Thanks to its smooth surface, standing seam roofs are popular in snow country because they easily shed the white stuff. Just a small temperature change will cause the layer in contact with the roof to melt, and the snow slide will begin. And for those interested in water-collection systems, standing seam panels roofs are just the ticket.

  • Cost: Comparing costs to shingles, standing seam panel roofs are certainly more expensive. But consider the cost over the long-term. A shingle roof will require replacement, on average, within 15 years, which is also when the price tag for that material roughly doubles. If you're planning on staying in your home, it's cheaper to spend more on the quality metal roof system once than to keep paying (and paying more overall) for an inferior roofing material that will require regular replacement and doesn't offer anywhere near the same benefits. PLUS, there's a great selection of value panel roofs on the low end of the price spectrum that still offer great performance and longevity.
