Will Colored Metal Roofs Fade?

A reader recently asked the following question on our blog post, "Best Colors for Metal Roofing":

Q. I'm interested in using a colored (brown/bronze) metal roof, but was told that the color would fade. Is that correct?

A. It depends entirely on the quality of the finish. There are a number of types of finishes that are used on zinc-coated steels and aluminum metal roofing (the most popular type of colored metal roofing materials). Some of them are made of very pigment-dense finishes that have 40+ year fade warranties, and some are made of cheaper paints that are likely to fade in a decade or less. So like many other things - you get what you pay for.
